Punteggio 18/20 · FINE+RARE

From the Chassagne side of the vineyard. This is quite reticent on the nose though there is some clear and very serious quality here. In the mouth the fruit is very ripe and nicely checked by fresh and vibrant acidity. There is structure too and this is a very, very impressive wine.

Pale lemon-yellow color. Deep but extremely reticent nose hints at musky iodine and smoky oak. Much more tightly coiled today than the Chevalier-Montrachet and not at all exotic, hinting at juicy ripe pear and peach fruit and steely minerality. The slowly building finish displays outstanding verve and a strong spine for aging.

The 2011 Montrachet is all about power, at least today. Huge beams of minerality run through the fruit, adding support, precision and nuance, but the 2011 remains a huge, large-scaled wine in need of serious time to be fully appreciated. Pure, graphite-infused notes add energy to the finish. Jadot's Montrachet is 100% Chassagne fruit, but it has a level of elegance that is more reminiscent of Puligny, at least today.

Here the nose is notably more reserved with aromas of citrus zest, spice, wood toast, fennel and spice hints. This is also a very imposingly-scaled wine with its big, muscular and wonderfully complex flavors that culminate in a long, focused and explosive finish of breathtaking length and intensity. This overtly powerful effort should reward at least a decade in the cellar and drink well for another. A 'wow' wine. Tasted: Jun 11, 2013. Drink: 2023+
