Punteggio 91-92/100 · Da bere 2004-2012, Pierre Rovani, Dec 2001

The mineral, spice-scented 2000 Montrachet is light to medium-bodied, yet rich and satin-textured. Highly focused, this wine exhibits outstanding depth and concentration. Waves of minerals intermingled with citrus fruits and pears can be discerned throughout its expressive character as well as in its lengthy finish. Projected maturity: 2004-2012. Blind, I would have identified this as a Chevalier as it is so incredibly linear and direct with minerality to burn plus simply fantastic precision and then tack on a finish that was so long that I could still taste it the next morning. It is also quite powerful, perhaps even more powerful than the Demoiselles and the flavors are a bit more opulent and sumptuous with slightly lower acidity. This is a complete wine, seamless, perfectly integrated, concentrated, complex and should develop over a decade and last for two or more. A Montrachet as it should be. Reticent nose hints at marzipan and resiny oak. Huge and saline but youthfully unevolved and dominated today by penetrating acidity. Undeniably thick and powerful but aggressive today, even brutal. This is bigger by far than the Chevalier and will last a long time, but it hard to view today. Its great persistence gives me optimism.
