The 1998 Montrachet Grand Cru has a quite brilliant bouquet. There is clearly laser-like precision, the aromatics appearing to shimmer with mineralité . If you have ever been caving in a limestone pavement, as I did as a student, then the aromatics reminded me of that memorable experience. The palate is beautifully balanced with a perfect line of acidity, ineffably precise so much so that you barely perceive the intensity and depth on the finish. It might be a notch below the transcendental 1998 Montrachet from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, but a very small notch. Tasted at the La Paulée in Beaune.

Ramonet's multi-dimensional 1998 Montrachet is certainly one of the stars of the vintage. Its spice, star anise, toasted oak, and mineral-scented nose gives way to a rich, broad, powerful character. Medium to full-bodied, and exhibiting layers of ripe apples, white pears, and stone-like flavors, this is an intense, concentrated, compelling effort. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2010.
