Punteggio 97/100 · Da bere 2018-2030, Neal Martin, May 2019

The 1993 Montrachet Grand Cru is blessed with a showstopping bouquet, scents of wet limestone, wild moorland and almost flint-like aromas. It is cut from the same cloth as the 1998 served practically alongside, albeit without quite the same laser-like precision. The palate is powerful and reminds me of the 1995 Montrachet encountered just a month earlier. The immediate impression is one of tension and energy, tucked underneath are hints of walnut and smoke, delivering an almost Chablis-like finish that feels undimmed after almost a quarter of a century. This is a fabulous and quite life-affirming Montrachet. Tasted at the La Paulée in Beaune.

A huge and powerful nose of stunning complexity leads to round, muscular and deep flavors that are massive in size and scope. There is serious volume to this wine and while there is still superb intensity, the flavors have finally begun to mellow somewhat even though this will be capable of holding another 10+ years. That said, this has reached its peak and is truly a stunning Monty. Multiple, and consistent, notes.

One of the finest wines of the vintage with aromas that are still tight and brooding while offering white flowers, spice, wild herbs and pain grillé merging into intense, powerful, muscular yet sculpted flavors of incredible depth and complexity. I could taste this wine the next day as it practically etches itself into the palate. A dramatic wine of incredible quality and it is still on the ascendancy.
