Very good: roast meats, ripe but savoury fruit – a skilful combination – spices, cocoa. Lengthy with tip-toe balance on the finish. The epitome of Italian style with serious complexity. (RH)

The 2000 Barolo Sorano Coste & Bricco, from the highest, best-exposed part of this cru, is riper, fruitier, more complex, longer and more focused in flavor than the Sorano with classy, light-grained tannins and a warm, structured finish. It will drink well for over a dozen years. Not as good as the first-rate 1999s and the excellent 2001s waiting to be released, this wine nonetheless holds its own quite well in the context of a more difficult vintage.
