Palish medium red. Dusty, spicy aromas of strawberry, pepper and iron. Smooth and spicy in the mouth, with a distinctly juicy freshness and a firm spine. Nicely primary for the vintage but with a supple texture. This is the cuvee that Montille referred to last year as "girlie wine," his father's description for today's more pliant and fruit-driven Domaine de Montille wines, which are far more user-friendly than the lean, austere, high-acid wines that Hubert made a generation ago.

Medium red. Musky, reduced aromas of cherry, raspberry, leather and underbrush. Fat and sweet without being heavy or over the top. This is really rich, full and broad for a Volnay from this estate. Finishes with a light dusting of tannins and lovely persistence. I asked Etienne what his father Hubert, who was known for making lean, austere, high-acid wines that needed long bottle aging, thinks about this style of wine. "He calls it girlie wine," replied Etienne, without missing a beat.

Volnay’s Domaine de Montille is one of the most historic in the Côte d’Or. Founded in 1730, the property remains family-owned and run, with Etienne de Montille – the ninth generation – at the helm today.
