Complex nose combines lemon cream, orange, vanilla and hazelnut. Sweet, silky and suave, with lovely harmonious acidity framing the orange and lemon flavors. Pure, refined wine that really spreads out to coat the palate. Finishes with sneaky power and musky minerality. This wine always finishes its malolactic fermentation late, notes Latour, who kept it in cask until February (with the fining taking place in barrel) and bottled it in April-or not much more than a month prior to my visit.

Mouth-watering aromas of yellow plums, hazel nuts, and copious spices can be discerned in the nose of the 2002 Meursault Charmes. This packed, seamless, supple wine is medium-bodied, plush, and reveals dense layers of yellow fruits (including plums, peaches, and golden raisins). This velvety-textured, forward, charming (pardon the pun) wine should be drunk over the next 6 years. Jean-Pierre Latour defines the 2002 vintage for white Burgundies as “tenderness plus fruit, like 1992 but with the freshness of 1996.” He went on to add that he was “stupefied by the completeness of the 2002s. Analytically, they are like the 2000s, but tender, not square like the 2000s.” This estate began harvesting its wines on the 20th of September.
