Punteggio 97/100 · Da bere 2026-2041, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Dec 2025

The 2006 Barolo Monprivato (magnum) moves us into another register, a register defined by power and textural intensity. Dark fruit, lavender, spice, graphite and crushed rocks open first, before swaths of tannin make themselves felt on the mid-palate and finish. Readers lucky enough to own the 2006 are in for a real treat.

First bottle corked.  Second bottle: Mid bricky red. Fragrant and inviting. Senescent red fruit – but still so much fruit – and a light floral note, roses and rose hips, such tangy sweetness. Leathery and dried cherries on the palate, firm but silky tannins. So gorgeously scented on the nose and palate and just a little bit of grip to the tannins. All in perfect harmony. Opens out to a hint of lavender. Incredibly long. Gorgeous. (JH)

Fresh and autumnal, mulchy and burly. Very much for the long term. (JR)

Punteggio 93+/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Nov 2011

Medium palish red; less saturated than the 2007. Less fruity and floral and more earthy/spicy on the nose than the '07; exuded notes of red berry liqueur and underbrush with air. Then tighter and more penetrating in the mouth, conveying more force than the '07 and a much more austere texture. Seems large but at the same time lower in alcohol. This very precise, powerfully structured wine finishes dry, long and youthfully imploded, with subtle spice and floral nuances. More classic than the 2007 but also far less agreeable today: forget this one in the cellar for a decade, at which point it may make my early rating look stingy.
