I had looked forward to tasting this wine with great anticipation as I had given the 1928 a perfect score on two occasions, most recently in September, 1994. There was no such score for any of the three bottles served at the Christie's tasting. The wine revealed substantial amber in its garnet color in addition to spicy, cedar, roasted tobacco, dried herb, and mineral aromas. Medium-bodied, but attenuated and losing its fruit, this Latour fell off the palate, leaving only acidity and tannin in the finish. What a disappointment. However, readers should recognize that pristine bottles, and those in larger formats might taste perfect.
