Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Jacques Caillon’s 2011 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet has a very Zen-like bouquet: well defined but at the end of the day, just missing a little vigor at the moment. The palate is crisp and fresh with Granny Smith apples, orange rind and a pleasing saline element; however, it seems very tight and unresponsive toward the finish. Perhaps another bottle in a couple of years' time would show better?

Honey, almonds, flowers, mint, nutmeg and tangerine meld together in the 2011 Puligny-Montrachet Les Champs Canet. Rich and viscous on the palate, the Champs Canet is laced with hints of apricot jam, white truffle and ash. I can see the 2011 fleshing out beautifully with more time in the bottle, which should bring out the wine's inner sweetness and honeyed qualities even more.
This is notably riper than the Macherelles, indeed to the point that there is a hint of the exotic with its aromas of pear, white peach and dried apricot. There is markedly better concentration to the medium-bodied flavors that display plenty of dry extract on the intense and saline-infused finish. Carillon seems to always do an excellent job with this wine and the 2011 version seems to be a bit finer than it usually is. Tasted: Jun 15, 2014. Drink: 2017+
