The 2009 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Grandes Ruchottes was tasted from a splendid magnum, and it continues to be a beautiful expression of the vintage. The richness of the growing season is conveyed by the nose, courtesy of scents of dried honey, almonds and a light, Riesling-inspired petrol scent. The palate shows a touch of viscosity on the entry, but the wine's acidity is perfectly tuned to counterbalance that. Maybe because it came from magnum, it was a little more youthful than a bottle version, although it suggested it will continue to evolve over the next decade. If you want a Chassagne-Montrachet overflowing with flavor and class, this is where to come. Tasted May 2017.

The 2009 Chassagne-Montrachet Grand Ruchottes is a gorgegous wine. It blossoms in all directions with gorgeous, textured fruit and expressive aromatics. Sweet petrol notes develop in the glass, giving the wine a very unique personality. This is a decidedly large-scaled, textured Burgundy, but all of the elements are superbly balanced. This old vine parcel (planted in 1939) yielded a wine of considerable pedigree and sheer class. Anticipated maturity: 2014+. ||Alex Moreau showed me a wide range of wines during my recent visit. The 2009s were brought in with natural alcohols between 12.5-13%. Moreau told me the fermentations lasted 4-6 months, with no batonnage or racking, and that his goal was to retain as much freshness, which meant using relatively low levels of new oak (30% max for the premier crus.) The wines spent 12 months in oak followed by six months in steel prior to being bottled. This a beautiful set of 2009s. The wines are distinguished by their finesse and exceptional overall balance. I only had a chance to taste a few 2010s, as my schedule was pretty tight the day I visited, but the wines I sampled are very promising. Wine Advocate.September, 2011
