The 1989 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs was one of the unexpected delights of the vertical, the only previous bottle that I have tasted showing not nearly as well as this. It has an intriguing bouquet with hints of menthol and iodine infusing the mixture of red and black fruit. The palate is clean and fresh, succulent in the mouth with vibrant citrus fruit embroidered through the red cherry and orange zest notes. Very persistent on the finish, this 1989 should not be under-estimated.
