Punteggio 90/100 · Neal Martin (Vinous), Jul 2026

The 2024 Vermentino is airy and gracious. Dried citrus peel, white orchard fruit and lifted floral overtones are finely sculped. An attractive Riesling-like note lingers on the bright, persistent finish.

A special limited, personally dedicated magnum from a special edition to celebrate the 40th vintage of this pioneering white wine. Grown in the white clay soils of the Grattamacco hills from a mass selection of old vines. Very obviously saline, smooth-textured and already approachable. Ripe but fresh fruit. A tad lighter than Sardinian versions but impressively persistent. I fear I have opened this too soon as it has everything needed for a much longer life. But it was much appreciated by Delia Smith and her husband Michael Wynn-Jones. Jancis Robinson

The 2024 Vermentino is vertical, focused, and refreshing, with floral aromas of tarragon, white pepper, white peach, citrus blossom, sea spray, and lemon candies. It reflects a bright, energetic vintage, with a zesty, vibrant palate and notable intensity. Medium-bodied, it combines immediacy with the structure to age gracefully, showing both freshness and evolving floral complexity with air. Drink 2026-2034. Founded in 1977 and only the second winery in the Bolgheri appellation following Sassicaia, the chief winemaker at Grattamacco is Luca Marrone, assisted by Davide Torchio.

The Grattamacco 2024 Bolgheri Vermentino shows spicy fruit with notes of star fruit and citrus, alongside a softer layer of sweetness expressed as honeydew melon and pear. Fresh and zesty in character, the wine is crafted for easy versatility at the table, with bright acidity supporting a clean, lively finish. About one-third of the total volume sees brief aging in barrique and tonneaux, adding subtle texture. Production totals 25,000 bottles.

Grattamacco’s story begins when Piermario Meletti Cavallari purchased an abandoned vineyard in 1977 and grafted over many of the vines. He produced one of the earliest Super Tuscans in 1982 – a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese and a wine which continues to earn acclaim today.
