The name means sunset vineyard because it gets the late-afternoon light. It’s a wine full of tannins, a mille-feuille of tannins, but all of them fine and all of them drenched in the scarlet sweetness of jewelled fruit. Fragrant from beginning to end. Alpine strawberries. Long. A heartbeat wine. (TC)

The 2023 Beaune Aux Coucherias 1er Cru was picked on the first day of the heatwave. It has a complex, engaging and clearly delineated bouquet, veering more toward black fruit compared to Champy's Hautes-Côtes cuvées, with brown spices, cep mushrooms and light sea spray notes. The palate is medium-bodied with finely knit tannins. It now veers the other way toward red fruit, interlaced with (again) brown spices, thyme and white pepper. Quite austere toward the finish, this is a long-lasting Beaune Premier Cru that should age with style.

This beautiful Beaune 1er Cru marries summer flower fragrances with red fruit charm and elegant tannins to deliver a very vivid expression of this appellation. I love the interplay of chalky tannins, zesty freshness and cherry pit flavors. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink from release.
