2024 Pommard Les Rugiens

The 2024 Pommard Rugiens 1er Cru comes from two 350-litre barrels. It has a light bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, briar and touches of cedar, though it is missing some intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded tannins lending it a Volnaysian texture. Fine acidity, though it does not kick on towards the finish, feeling a bit conservative overall with tea leaves on the aftertaste.

More crimson than ruby. Immediately, the nose gives off its iron rich aromatics. It is that, plus the exceptional depth of fruit which characterise Rugiens, and this wine does not disappoint in the latter capacity either. All red, nothing black, adequate acidity, and appropriate tannins which give sufficient grip to the wine. A fraction of pepper to finish. Young vines with top pinot selection have delivered well.

Half young vines planted in 2018, half old vines in the Rugiens-Bas. The young Pinot vines come from Jadot’s own nursery. Cask sample. Mid ruby. Red fruits of strawberry, redcurrants and red cherries. High, elevated acidity, medium body. The fruit on the palate is quite sappy and juicy. Good wine, fleshing out on the finish with some moderately punchy tannins. (MH)
