Impossible to ignore, the 2006 Brunello di Montalcino lifts from the glass with a whiff of dusty earth, dried flowers, crushed rocks and woodland berries. It possesses a pretty inner sweetness and crisp mineral finesse, displaying soft textures and nuances of sour citrus. Zesty acidity cleans up the experience remarkably well as the 2006 tapers off with a reverberation of tension and a slight sensation of sous-bois that lingers. The vines of Fonterenza were just six years old at the time of this bottling. Still maturing, the 2006 is a total pleasure to taste.

Opened two days previously. Deep ruby with orange rim. Pronounced, perfumed cherry and nutmeg and a hint of dried fig. Very inviting. Beautiful fruit palate with perfect balance and muscular, but fine tannin. Complete and already approachable but can age. (WS)

Barrel sample. A nose that leaps out of the glass, quite compelling, suggestions of orange rind and bitter chocolate. Soft gentle fruit and chocolate truffle wrapped in chewy finely-spiced tannin. (TC)
