This is a wonderful vintage for the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, and even if this wasn't the greatest era for this particular vineyard, the 1980 Romanée-St-Vivant Grand Cru remains a beautiful wine, offering up aromas of sweet red fruit, orange rind, wilted rose petals, vine smoke and exotic spices, followed by a medium-bodied, supple and satiny palate that's bright and fine-boned, concluding with a long, perfumed finish. It isn't as textural or layered as Richebourg, Grands-Echézeaux or La Tâche in this vintage, but it's a wonderful bottle.

The 1980 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s Romanée St. Vivant, on the other hand, was fully mature and perhaps slightly past its peak. The color was faded, and the wine presented a tertiary expression of sweet, perfumed fruit, autumn leaves and baking spices, with resolved tannins and a medium-bodied, soft-textured personality. Though pretty, I probably would have enjoyed it more at an earlier stage in its life. I also noted that the wine was considerably less fresh than recent bottles of the Grands-Echézeaux and La Tâche of the same vintage.
