Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, the 2014 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru les Referts was showing a small reduction on the nose, though there appears to be plenty of fresh green apple and gunflint scents waiting behind it. The palate is pretty with touches of orange zest and apricot on the entry. This is a sensual Puligny-Montrachet, perhaps not as terroir-driven as others, yet it is very clean and poised with subtle honeyed notes furnishing the finish. This is an arresting Puligny-Montrachet from Bachelet-Monnot.

Healthy medium yellow. The ripest 2014 on the nose to this point: yellow peach, spices, butter and hazelnut. Fatter by far than the Meursault Clos du Cromin, offering lovely sweetness and concentration of yellow fruits. These 50-year-old millerandé vines on SO4 rootstock produced very small berries with strong acidity in 2014, noted Alexandre Bachelet. Finishes with superb salinity and thrust.
Smoky overlay over very ripe fruit. Tense and tingly. Very nervy and full of pure expressive fruit. A big step up from the village wine. Dry finish. (JR)
