Massolino's flagship 2005 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda opens with the beguiling aromatics that are a signature of this site. On the palate, though, the wine is still very much primary and in need of time to full come together. The flavors are bright and nuanced throughout, with plenty of energy running through a core of red berries, mint, lavender and rose petals. Still quite young, the 2005 needs at least a few years (or more) in the cellar to be at its best.

Lustrous ruby with orange tinges and still youthful looking. Subtle balsamic and fine. Not hugely concentrated on the palate, more fine and elegant and with polished tannins. (WS)
Medium red. Very subdued aromas of red plum, tobacco, spices and dried rose. Quite backward and unforthcoming, showing little in the way of easy sweetness. In fact, a bit sullen now. Displays good minerality on the aftertaste, which features substantial dusty tannins. Will the wine's fruit outlast the tannins?
Serralunga d'Alba. Concentrated ruby. Very closed on the nose, but on the palate more accessible. Strawberry and sweet cherry spreading over the palate. Richly tannic, but intense fruit goes on and on. Big finish. A brick building. (WS)
