Exotic notes dominated the 2002 Lafarge Volnay Clos des Ducs, especially in the bouquet. Both Volnays were open for business and drinking beautifully.

Medium red. Perfumed, floral aromas of cherry, raspberry, minerals and earth. Sweet, dense and deep, with a silky texture and lovely subtle intensity of flavor. This boasts terrific lift and a light touch. Finishes very long, aromatic and spicy, with compelling sweetness and solid tannins to go with its delicacy of flavor. Complete Volnay.
Loads of red fruits are intermingled with candied blood oranges in the profound aromas of the 2002 Volnay Clos du Chateau des Ducs. This suave, medium-bodied wine displays a densely-packed core of red cherries, raspberries, and strawberries in its wonderfully ripe character. Its long, fruit-filled finish reveals copious quantities of tannin that demand patience. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2017. Good full red. Showing less fruit and more earth than the 1er cru, but still quite expressive. Then sweet, fat and fleshy, with an impression of soft acidity. The pure fruit flavors make themselves felt on the wine's very strong back half, building impressively and lingering long. A complete, classy Volnay in the making.
