Now elevated to Gran Selezione status, the 2011 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Casanova Il Puro offers jammy notes of blackberry and strawberry with soft tannins and thick texture. The wine shows the characteristics of the warm growing season and reveals less complexity as a result. There is a touch of bitterness on the close. To my palate, the vintage heat leaves too strong a mark.

The 2011 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Il Puro is rich, powerful and intense. The warmth of the vintage and aging in French oak give the wine its distinctive ample frame and unctuous personality. Ripe red cherry, mint, chalk and dried flowers are some of the notes that open up as the wine gains volume with time in the glass. The 2011 offers notable richness, but my impression is that it is best enjoyed over the next decade or so, as the fruit is a bit forward. The 2011 will appeal to readers who like intense, powerful Tuscan wines.
‘The pure one’, this wine is called. Hmmm. Brilliant mid ruby with orange tinges. Nutty peppery cherry nose with hints of oak. Supple fruit with lovely tannic bite and freshness on the finish. A little flirty because of the oak right now, but will improve. (WS)
