Saturated ruby-red. The nose is like a liqueur of blueberry, with accompanying notes of spicecake, licorice, tar and herbs. Supple, exotic and a bit exaggerated, with a somewhat coarse texture to the chocolate and herb flavors and only moderate flesh and depth. Lacks real nuance and class.

Castelgiocondo's 2003 Brunello di Montalcino is made in a super-ripe, dense style that favors a concentrated expression of fruit over varietal expression. This unctuous, brooding wine is loaded with the essence of blueberries, blackberries, licorice, smoke, tar and herbs. It offers excellent length but only modest polish in its tannins and overall balance. I am convinced that the talented Lamberto Frescobaldi is capable of making far more important wines than this effort suggests.
