FINE+RARE, Jan 2018

Produced from clay and limestone soils on the famous hill of Montosoli in the northeast of Montalcino, the wine is aged in Slavonian oak barrels for 36 months before spending 6 months in bottle. There is incredible attention to detail at this estate with all harvesting done entirely by hand. After two quite inconsistent vintages in 2011 and 2012, 2013 is more homogenous across the entire Brunello appellation. Generally speaking, the wines are medium bodied, elegant and restrained in style, partly due to the cooler nature of the vintage, yet with classic Brunello structure that will give the 2013s very good ageing ability. It is a vintage that fans of classic Brunello will want to make sure is in the cellar.

Dark red-ruby. Camphor, mint and blueberry on the nose. Then refined flavors of red berries, dried herbs and quinine that display a steely, linear quality. Very clean Brunello of early appeal that finishes long with a bittersweet touch, an air of austerity and a touch of aromatic herbs. Lovely Brunello. (ID)

The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is a wine of beautiful and noteworthy elegance. It shows a fine and delicate quality of fruit, with wild berry and dark cherry at the front. That fruit intensity builds slowly as the wine warms in the glass, but it always stays confined and graceful throughout. Similar elements characterize the mouthfeel that is lean, compact and silky.

This is intense and complex yet subtle with fantastic aromas of rose petal, plum, clove and fresh mushroom. Hints of stems. Full body, focused and polished with a linear line of tannins and fabulous length. A beauty. Better after 2021 but already a joy to taste.
