Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot has a slightly smudged bouquet. It feels a little reduced with dusky, brambly, dark berry fruits that are sullen. The palate is smudged on the entry with chewy tannins and moderate acidity, but it is lacking a little finesse and detail.

12-15 months in oak, about 30-50% new. Mid to deep cherry. Mix of sweet red fruit and oak spice on the nose. A touch peppery. Tannins are on the firm, dry side but fine and in balance with everything else. Light and gentle but still has a backbone. (JH)
(from tank): Bright, deep red. Redcurrant, mocha and spices on the slightly medicinal nose; lower-pitched and less perfumed than the Fremiets. Supple and deep but a bit dry in spite of its ripeness and solid extract. In a disturbed state today and showing limited sweetness of fruit. Perhaps a bit hardened by SO2.
