Le Ragnaie's 2016 Rosso di Montalcino is contained and elegantly restrained, yet it also portrays its distinctive territory-driven qualities with just the right measure of intensity. Rosso di Montalcino is an often overlooked category of wine that deserves more attention thanks to its accessible price and versatile drinking style. I know that when I travel to Montalcino for work and want to unwind at the town's popular pizzeria, I always order a Rosso over a Brunello for my dinner pairing. This is exactly the kind of wine I would look for on those occasions. It opens to authentic aromas of wild berry and forest floor, with well-managed acidity and a docile, compact mouthfeel. Le Ragnaie released this wine in August 2019. Some 30,000 bottles were made.

Le Ragnaie's 2016 Rosso di Montalcino is striking. Deep and yet wonderfully translucent, the 2016 captures the purest essence of Sangiovese. Sweet red cherry, mint, rose petal and sweet spice give the 2016 a striking upper register of aromatic brilliance to play off its mid-weight personality. This is such a pretty and expressive wine. It's all class here.
Quite reduced at first but opens nicely to reveal fresh red cherries and citrus with bark and cedar. Medium body, medium-chewy tannins and a grainy finish. Drink now.
Mid ruby with orange tinges. Dusty and stalky on the nose. Supple sour-cherry and dusty tannins on the palate and only slowly reveals the full concentration of sweet-sour cherry fruit on the finish. Grows on you. (WS)
