The 2008 Montefalco Sagrantino Colleallodole is simply beautiful. It has a little more depth, richness and creaminess than the estate's straight Sagrantino. Layers of soft, textured fruit caress the palate in this inviting Sagrantino. The round, expressive fruit captures the essence of Bevagna in its attractive contours and supple personality. The 2008 isn't a huge Collellodole, instead it is a wine that impresses for its fabulous balance. There are a handful of more famous Sagrantinos, but the Colleallodole is the wine for readers who are looking for the best in artisan craftsmanship. I imagine the 2008 will drink well early and expect it will also mature sooner than other recent vintages.

The Antano story began in 1969 when Francesco’s father Milziade switched from being mezzadri (sharecroppers) to being land owners, buying 30 ha of prime Umbrian calcareous clay soil between Montefalco and Bevagna. Francesco’s Sagrantino juice spent 30 days on its skin, then vinified in stainless steel before a long, gentle ageing for three years in large Slavonian oak. This is smelling a bit hot. And then very tough tannins. A very demanding wine. Inky. Drying. (JR)

The 2008 Montefalco Sagrantino is a very pretty and delicate wine. Finessed, silky tannins that are almost rarely seen in Sagrantino support expressive layers of fruit. Overall the 2008 is the mid-weight gracious Sagrantino best suited to drinking over the next few years, as it doesn’t have the structure, stuffing or personality to make old bones. Still, there is a lot to like. Hints of licorice, leather, tobacco and a host of dark aromas and flavors wrap around the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018. Antano represents the small-scale, artisan side of Montefalco. Working out of a small, cramped winery that could easily be mistaken for a cellar in Burgundy or Piemonte, Francesco Antano crafts wines imbued with personality. At their best, these are some of the very finest wines to emerge from Montefalco. Antano is located in Bevagna, a part of the Montefalco zone distinguished for a relatively warm micro-climate that results in an earlier harvest vis-a-vis the rest of the zone. Importer: T.
