Peppery and scented with plenty of spice on the palate. Beautifully compact structure of acidity and tannins, clay-like compactness but also a freshness that gives the impression there were some stems in the ferment. All still to play for. With food (saddle of lamb), it becomes much more silky and charming, bringing out cherry fruit and sweet tobacco flavours. Real tension here.

The 2011 Barolo Lazzarito is a landmark wine and one of the best expressions made region-wide in this challenging vintage. The bouquet is gorgeous thanks to the never-ending aromas of dark fruit, licorice and balsam herb that peel off the top. The Lazzarito vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba is characterized by thick soils and deep shifts between daytime and nighttime temperatures. These are important factors that lead to quality fruit despite the summer heat.
Lots of gorgeous fruit here with dried berry and walnut plus hints of hazelnuts. Full body, integrated tannins and a clean, fresh finish. Very youthful and direct. Give it two or three years of bottle age.
Just mid ruby with broad orange-tinged rim. Complex sweet cherry and garden herbs on the nose. Almost a little exotic and certainly attention grabbing. Really tight palate walking a tight, but convincing, rope of fine ripe fruit and rich tannins and just the right amount acidity. Chewy and tactile and long. Impressive cru and masterfully executed.
