Good deep red-ruby. Complex but reticent aromas of raspberry, smoked meat and licorice. Juicier and tighter than the comparatively fat and easy Peuillets, with ripe acids giving shape and sappiness to the pure flavors. In fact, this seemed to shut down in the glass. Boasts very good cut and precision, as well as an old-vines intensity that should enable this to age slowly.

In typical fashion for this cru, the Pavelot’s 2005 Savigny-les-Beaune Les Narbantons is both broader and more obviously structured than its siblings. Cooked cherry, iodine, toasty nuttiness and bitter herbal nuances combine for a wine of pith, pungent minerality, and tart but ripe red fruit concentration. This impresses with its density and depth, even if the flavors are somewhat somber and the tannin and acidity prominent. These vines are nearly eighty years old. Good bright ruby-red. Ripe, complex aromas of sappy dark raspberry and spices. Offers good volume and breadth, but with its firm acidity this comes across as youthfully taut and dominated by its structure. Penetrating, juicy flavors of redcurrant and tobacco boast excellent vinosity. This rather powerful but closed wine will need a good five or six years of bottle aging.
