The 1997 Villa Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva (90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo, aged in large French oak casks) reveals the vintage's super-ripeness as well as abundant quantities of black currant fruit mixed with cherry liqueur, tobacco, saddle leather, and spice aromas. Sweet, because of high glycerin and low acidity, this dark ruby-colored, beautifully made, plump, lush Chianti should be drunk over the next 5-7 years. Importer: Remy Amerique, New York, NY; tel. Garnet color of good depth. Classic sangiovese aromas of plum, light leather, and tobacco. Medium in weight but with plenty of intensity and persistence. Doesn't have the flesh or depth of an outstanding wine, but very good considering the huge production of 200,000 cases. The tannins are beginning to round out.
