The 2016 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru has an open and generous bouquet with black cherries, raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, an undercurrent of damp woodland and pine cones, complex and very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, fresh and crisp with a beautiful line of acidity. I was expecting more complexity on the finish that does not match the aromatics at the moment. Hopefully that might meliorate with bottle age. One to watch. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting in Burgundy. (NM) 91+

A markedly spicy nose speaks of poached plum, dark cherry and pretty violet and lilac wisps. Once again the mouth feel of the medium-bodied flavors is ultra-fine with a lovely minerality adding a bit of lift to the punchy and sneaky long finish. This needs to add a bit more overall depth but the requisite stuffing and tannic spine appears to be up to the task. In a word, lovely.
The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets displays pretty aromas of dried flowers, small wild berries, rose petals and espresso roast that are subtly framed by a deft touch of spicy new wood. On the plate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with simultaneously the most depth and the most finesse of any wine in the Clerget cellar, structured around fine, powdery tannin and succulent acids. It's showing very well.
