Collelceto is located on the western part of the Brunello zone. From six hectares of vines proprietor Ezio Palazzesi produces a Rosso, as well as this outstanding Brunello which blends elements of traditional and modern styles. Collelceto’s 2001 Brunello di Montalcino offers attractive suggestions of tobacco, scorched earth, cherries and minerals on a structured frame with outstanding length as well as definition on the palate and a long, finessed finish. Made in a style that is at once delicate yet generous, this medium to full-bodied effort will require a few years in the cellar to be at its best and should drink well to age twenty. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2021. Importer: Montecastelli Selections, New York, NY; tel. (212) 414-4898.

Full red-ruby. Musky aromas of dark cherry, licorice and chicory, with a suggestion of liqueur-like sweetness. Sweet, suave and firm, with lovely inner-mouth perfume to its cherry, floral, mineral and spicy oak flavors. This has sneaky depth and a lovely light touch. Finishes firmly tannic, aromatic and long, with excellent lift.
Notably deep colour. Roast chestnut aroma. Full, rich, quite a modern style. Hint of truffles. Quite a dry finish but certainly dramatic. Velvety texture inclines to furry – could do with a little more freshness. (JR)
