A pretty, cool and very restrained nose of ripe red currant, dark cherry and soft earth and spice notes are also trimmed in a deft touch of wood. The supple yet powerful medium weight flavors possess good size and weight while displaying a relatively refined mouth feel thanks to the fine-grained tannins, all wrapped in a concentrated, balanced and impressively persistent finish. This classy and beautifully balanced Champans will need 5 to 7 years to shed at least some of its tannic core and should reward 10 to 12.

The 2014 Volnay Champans 1er Cru, incidentally Pierrick Bouley's first vintage, has a delightful, crisp redcurrant and raspberry-scented nose, impressive in terms of intensity. Incense aromas manifest with just a few swirls of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins. There is a little angularity to this Volnay, perhaps just missing a bit of freshness and depth on the mid-palate, leaving those tannins exposed and creating a granular finish. Perhaps the aromatics deserved a better palate? But this is still drinking well and should offer another 5-8 years of drinking pleasure.
