I have never been an ardent fan of the 1991 Meursault Rougeots from Coche-Dury. This is the third time that I have tasted the wine. It has quite a deep straw color. The nose is reluctant to give much at first, only gradually offering melted wax and damp straw scents, not a million miles away from a mature Loire (Chenin Blanc) in style. The palate is balanced but simple, with a pleasant bead of acidity. It is hampered by a lack of vim and vigor, plus there is some bitterness on the finish. It is not a bad mature white Burgundy but you are left with the feeling…is that it?

While this bottle is better than the one that I tasted just over a decade ago, the 1991 Meursault Rougeot is still a rather “ordinary” wine from Coche-Dury. Quite deep in color, it has a decent nose of lavender, yellow flowers and a touch of orange blossom. The palate is smooth and rounded in the mouth, lightly honeyed and displaying what appeared to be a touch of botrytis toward the spicy-tinged, pineapple finish, which would not be surprising since apparently Jean-François Coche admitted to picking the fruit a little tardy in this year. Still a respectable Meursault for its age, but after two decades it is lacking fireworks.
