Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2025-2040, Jeb Dunnuck, Jan 2024

The 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Coltassala is a deep jeweled red color and reveals a sweet perfume of polished leather, raspberry liqueur, candied roses, and sweet soil, with a touch of blue fruit coming through as well. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with ripe tannins and rounded, red-berried fruit, and it has more modest acidity and a bit of black tea and forest herbs on the finish. It’s an appealing wine now, and although it will have a substantial and age-worthy life ahead, it may not be the longest-lived vintage of this wine. Drink 2025-2040. Located just to the north of Radda, Volpaia is a walled village dating back to the 12th century. The estate owns 46 hectares of vines, at elevations between 450 and 600 meters above sea level. As a founding member of the Chianti League (Lega del Chianti) in 1250, they have been associated with and included in the territory of Radda. The ownership and operations are run today by Carlo Mascheroni and Giovannella Stianti Mascheroni along with their children, Nicolo and Federica. Lorenzo Regoli has held the position as winemaker and vineyard manager since 2000, having previously worked at Livia Felluga in Friuli in the northeast.

Nicely balanced overall, the Volpaia 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Coltassala offers an earthy side that gives nice context to forest berry and wild cherry. There are floral notes as well, especially violet and iris, and the wine maintains a firm, medium-weight texture to the palate. The blend is 95% Sangiovese and 5% Mammolo, and the wine ages in barrique for 18 months. Production is 9,000 bottles.

The 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Coltassala is a sleek, elegant wine. Silky contours and sweet floral notes lend finesse to this very pretty, nuanced Gran Selezione. All the elements are very nicely balanced. Hints of black cherry, plum, licorice and leather lend darkness throughout.
