Good ruby-red. Crushed blackberry, raspberry, mocha and menthol on the nose, with a suggestion of superripeness. Silky, juicy and sweet, offering a rare combination of sheer sucrosite and inner-mouth lift; terrific dark fruit intensity here. Shows little sign of surmaturite or heat in spite of the 13.5% alcohol. Finishes with ripe, granular tannins, a note of licorice and lingering sweetness. The Pavelots made 40 barrels of this superb and atypically powerful wine. (ST)

Pavelot's 2006 Savigny-les-Beaune La Dominode is predictably their most concentrated wine of the vintage, though it is also tartly red-fruited, deeply meaty, slightly bitterly herbal and dark chocolate-tinged, as well as chalky, making for a rather somber overall impression. This lacks the fascination of the Gravains today, but should be well worth following for 5-6 years at least. It should be interesting to follow its evolution for at least 3-4 years. Hugues and Jean-Marc Pavelot – who began harvesting September 20 – approached the fruits of this vintage with caution and were in most instances very restrained in promoting fermentative extraction. The results are mixed, but in the best instances their approach has paid off in charming, youthfully satisfying wines. (30% new oak) Good full red. Wild red berries and licorice on the nose, lifted by herbs and pepper. Discreet on the attack, then opens up and spreads out on the back half, showing a spicy sweetness and very good persistence. The biggest and deepest of these young 2006s, conveying an impression of volume without heaviness; this really punches above its class. Finishes with very fine tannins.
