Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2013-2016, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Apr 2012

The 2001 Barolo Cannubi is a pretty wine, but despite its considerable charms, it remains heavily marked by French oak, which was 100% new in this vintage. There is plenty of intensity in the dark fruit, along with pretty suggestions of flowers, spices and mint that add complexity. Still, I can't help wondering what the 2001 might have been like with a less overt use of French oak. A recent magnum was naturally fresher than the normal bottle. I would prefer to drink the 2001 sooner rather than later.

I have a preference for the Via Nuova, a Barolo that generally plays second fiddle to the Cannubi. Not in 2001. Importer: Indigenous Selections, Fort Lauderdale FL; tel. (954) 963 6251

The 2001 Barolo Cannubi, a rich ruby, presents a complex, multi-dimensional nose of flowers, sweet fruit and toasted oak. The beautiful 2001 version is classic in every way, revealing layers of sweet fruit, licorice, tar, mineral and toasted oak flavors, with great length and freshness on the finish. It is a wine of great class and elegance.

Chiara Boschis makes two very elegant Barolos from her holdings in the center of town (I did not taste the 2001 Via Nuova). Although Boschis prefers to age her Barolos in 100% new oak, the wines are always well-balanced. While some of the aromas and flavors are those of the modern school, the wine’s medium weight and structure are decidedly classic.
