(4.3 grams per liter acidity): Bright, pale yellow. Restrained aromas of lemon and vanilla. At once dense and penetrating, showing an urgent Riesling-like quality and noteworthy energy to its citrus and mineral flavors. Densely packed, plush and long but youthfully backward. This seriously concentrated wine has the stuffing and structure to age but is not particularly austere today.

The 2014 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes has a touch of pineapple and apricot on the nose that perhaps would benefit from a little more delineation and nervosity. The palate is well balanced with orange zest and apricot notes, but I don't think this Meursault is up there with Pierre-Yves excellent Chassagne-Montrachets this year; it feels a little denuded of joie-de-vivre on the finish. This leaves you wanting more...hopefully that will develop in bottle.

Barrel sample. In the middle of Lafon’s parcel, under Perrières. Quite high. Prior to this it was made by Lafon. Sweet lime juice on the nose but not immediately much better than his St-Aubins! Top note of gorse. Sweetness underneath and less tension than the St-Aubins. Lots of chew. Needs a bit of time as it’s a tad reserved. (JR)

(one of the two barrels was new): Bright, pale yellow. Complex aromas of lemon curd, peach and vanilla; at once reduced and racy. Fine-grained, concentrated and minerally, showing a harmonious balance of sweetness and acidity. Just a touch of oak on the intense finish. The crop level was lower in Meursault even where there wasn't any hail, said Colin-Morey, adding that he'd love to buy some vines in this village.
