2018 Domaine des Comtés Lafon Meursault Charmes 1er Cru

The 2018 Meursault Charmes 1er Cru has a well-defined, quite intense bouquet. Touches of wild mint complement the citrus peel, crushed limestone and orange zest aromas, gaining transparency and airiness as it opens. The palate is well-balanced with nervous acidity, very cohesive, lightly spiced with real energy and impressive structure towards the finish. There is a sense of completeness to this Meursault Charmes that I really admire. Great potential. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 white tasting.

The 2018 Meursault Les Charmes 1er Cru has a backward bouquet that takes time to unfold, only reluctantly revealing delicate white peach, yellow plum and crushed stone aromas. A bit more coy than expected. The palate is discreet for a Charmes, precise as a Swiss watch, delivering a fine bead of acidity and a smooth, slightly honeyed finish. Very fine, though I wager not the best Charmes the domaine has produced in recent years.

The 2018 Meursault Les Charmes 1er Cru has a slightly more reserved bouquet than the Genevrières, focused but introspective at the moment, with touches of shale and limestone infusing the citrus fruit. The palate is very sensual and smooth on the entry, slightly honeyed and more open than the aromatics, with peach and honeydew melon toward the slightly waxy-textured finish. Superb.
