Punteggio 91/100 · Jeb Dunnuck, Mar 2012

From the highest altitude village in the Priorat, the 2001 Pasanau Priorat, a blend of 80% Cabernet and 20% Garnacha, sports a smoky, meaty profile with notions of black fruits, graphite, tobacco, and minerals giving way to a balanced, medium to full-bodied Priorat. Showing juicy, if not racy acidity, as well as a clean, fresh feel on the finish, this overall well put together Priorat is drinking perfect, yet should continue to evolve gradually over the coming 4-5 years.

(all cabernet sauvignon) Good medium ruby. Slightly reduced aromas of cherry, dark chocolate and espresso; initially a bit funky but cleaned up nicely with aeration. Concentrated and juicy, with intense, reduced flavors of bitter cherry, dark berries and minerals, complicated by a whiff of smoky chili peppers. Firmly structured wine that's still quite closed in on itself. Finishes with mouthdusting tannins. May ultimately merit an outstanding rating. One of the few legitimately interesting 100% cabernet wines I've tasted from Spain recently.

Very deep blackish crimson. Very ripe – overripe? Aggressive acid on the finish – a bit unbalanced. Furry tannins. Lacks really integrated acidity. Furry, indistinct. Awkward. (JR)
