The 2001 Chianti Classico Vigneto San Marcellino is a very pretty wine, even if it is just a touch slender. The 2001 has enough freshness to drink for another decade-plus. Stylistically, it is a bit on the more gracious side of things for San Marcellino, even if the tannins are potent. It will be interesting to see if the 2001 fills out a bit more. If it doesn't, it may always remain just a touch austere. A closing flourish of rose petal, mint, pomegranate and licorice complements the Sangiovese fruit nicely.

The 2001 Chianti Classico Riserva San Marcellino is a classic example of high level Sangiovese, intense and riveting in its expression of ripe red currant fruit, tar, and chocolate, warm and forceful on the palate, strong and balanced from the attack to the finish and with grip and authority to burn.
