Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Thibault Liger-Belair's 2014 Corton Renardes Grand Cru has a generous nose with plenty of red berry fruit. While there is evidence of a lot of new oak, it seems to be in sync with the fruit and should be absorbed with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, fleshy and extroverted. Perhaps not the most complex Corton on the block (or the hill?), but by the same token, one of the most enjoyable just to drink. Tasted September 2017.

Sweet start with a hint of cough sweets. A bit exaggerated. Lots of dry tannin on the end. (JR)
(vinified with 40% whole clusters for the first time; 60% new oak; production was just 24 hectoliters per hectare due to hail): Healthy medium red. Foxy reduction to the wild strawberry and raspberry aromas, along with a floral topnote. Suave, silky and dry on the palate, conveying attractive inner-mouth aromatic lift to the flavors of red berries, spices, smoke and flowers. Finishes with very good rising length and delicate spicy perfume. A rather intellectual wine, and evolving slowly. Liger-Belair noted that the hail in 2014 may have saved the quality of a lot of Côte de Beaune wines because a full crop would not have ripened completely. Incidentally, he noted that he vinified with stems in order to replace the energy that had been lost when the vines repaired themselves after the hail.
