The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Ragnaie V V shows very nicely thanks to its dark fruit aromas and its well-balanced intensity. Black cherries and dried blackberry float to the top in an elegant and graceful manner. The wine is tonic and tight in terms of mouthfeel, and it offers a long and pleasing sense of persistence. Distant whiffs of tobacco and exotic spice add more complexity to the overall presentation.

The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Ragnaie V.V. is darker, deeper and more concentrated than the straight Brunello, but it, too, lacks structure, intensity and freshness. Dark cherry, plum, leather, smoke and tobacco shape the pliant, open-knit finish. The 2011 could use another 6-12 months to allow the tannins to soften, but it should be drunk on the younger side.
Tasted blind. Mature-looking mid ruby with orange rim. A little stalky and savoury on the nose but with perfumed fruit underneath. Quite sweet, lacking a little definition and energy, which the stalky tannins cannot make up for. Evolving fast, it seems. Less than perfect sample? (WS)
