Medium red, a bit pale at the rim. Fairly evolved aromas of red fruits, musky coffee, chocolate and humus. Silky, round and rich but light on its feet. This is quite suave and persistent, even if it doesn't show the typical primary fruit character or grip of this superb premier cru chez Clair. Incidentally, Clair says he would start drinking this now, while Brun says he would wait. Clair compared the 2003s to the 1997s-"but less pruney."

A spiced blackberry-scented offering, the 2003 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.-Jacques exhibits a rich personality of jammy dark berries. Medium-bodied, velvety-textured, and with appealing depth, it coats the palate with its suave fruit. It should be drunk over the next 5-6 years. Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL; tel. Medium red. Red cherry and orange peel on the nose. Sweeter and denser than the Cazetiers, with more sap and spice. The most sharply delineated of these 2003s today. A supple, stylish wine with lovely inner-mouth perfume and suave tannins.
Sweet. Perhaps too sweet. A little bit overdone for me, though I suppose you could enjoy it this minute. (JR)
