Note di degustazione
Dark red stone fruits, smoke, tobacco and worn-in leather are some of the notes that inform Campogiovanni's 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Il Quercione. The heat of the vintage comes through in the slightly roasted flavors and drying tannins. Still, this is a solid effort for the year, although I am not sure the 2009 is truly deserving of Riserva status. Readers should give the 2009 a few hours of air to allow the tannins to soften, but I would not cellar the wine for too long, as the fruit will fade before the tannins melt away.

San Felice's 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Campogiovanni Il Quercione has already started to show attractive tertiary tones of licorice and cola that appear before the dark fruit and blackberry preserves. San Felice's base Brunello is a super-extracted wine, and this Riserva matches that immense intensity. Dried spice, balsam herb and root beer add pretty accents. Ultimately, this wine shows a higher degree of elegance and finesse compared to the 2010 base Brunello.
