Full bottle 1,336 g. 100% Merlot, the flagship wine of this estate owned by Paolo Panerai, executive deputy chairman of the Grandi Cru d’Italia Committee. Dark, heavily shaded garnet. Headily aromatic. Lots of ripe fruit, tea-leaf notes and a very sweet start to the palate which leads, via some milk-chocolate notes, to a slightly dry sandpaper finish. Not quite as appetising as the Ornellaia 2021. (JR)

The 2020 Baffonero is wonderfully elegant and polished. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, spice, new leather, licorice, mocha and espresso are nicely dialed up. In 2020, Baffonero marries Maremma opulence with quite a bit of freshness. Time in the glass helps open the aromatics, as attractive floral top notes round things out nicely.
