Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2026-2032, Eric Guido, Vinous, Nov 2025

The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is remarkably pretty, dusty, and perfumed with dried cherries, savory herbs, and cedar shavings on the nose. A vivid burst of ripe fruit introduces silken textures and an inner sweetness balanced by brisk acidity. The finish is long and vibrant with a crunchy mineral sensation and a hint of sour citrus. The 2005 Riserva was a barrel selection rather than a single-vineyard expression like the Poggio al Vento. It’s also the last year that Col d’Orcia bottled it.

Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2017-2030, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Feb 2015

The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is an intriguing wine. Dark, powerful, but with a distinct sense of classical austerity, the 2005 is tightly wound and in need of time. Scents of graphite, smoke, tobacco and game open up reluctantly, but the tannins still need time to soften. This is an especially dark, virile, brooding Brunello from Col d'Orcia. In 2005, the estate bottled a straight Riserva, but not their flagship Poggio al Vento.

Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2015-2030, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, May 2011

The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is typical Sangiovese from the southern part of the zone in a cool year. A gorgeous, translucent red, the Riserva offers up a classic profile of red fruit, tobacco, underbrush, mint and crushed flowers. The 2005 naturally has quite a bit of primary fruit left, but the real joy will come in another 5-10 years when the full range of tertiatry aromas is fully developed. This understated beauty is not an immediate wine, but in time it will thrill those who can look beyond instant gratification. An impeccably long, mineral-laced finish points to a bright future.
