The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Il Quercione wears a heavier mantle of dark fruit and spice compared to the annata wine (from the 2017 vintage) released at the same time. This wine is visibly darker and more concentrated (with a big 15.5% of alcohol). You get pressed blackberry, earth and sweet baking spice or Spanish cedar. This is a rich, more elaborate expression from Campogiovanni, yet the wine is also accessible and somewhat compact on the close.

Lustrous ruby with orange tinges. A loose fruit-and-oak nose. Concentrated, sweet-sour cherry and oak mingling on the palate. Lots of gravelly tannins on the fruit-driven finish. Quite the charmer, but already maturing. (WS)
A rich and alluring bouquet of plum sauce, tobacco and cocoa is lifted by mentholated herbs and hints of pine as the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Il Quercione unfolds in the glass. This coasts along the palate in velvety waves, presenting a polished display of ripe currants mixed with savory balsamic spices and minerals that add a salty sensation toward the close. The tannins are sweet and round, complemented by hints of sour citrus and tart cherry. As is usually the case, San Felice packs balanced pleasure into their Riserva Il Quercione, which will only need a short stay in the cellar to truly shine.
