The 2017 Beaune Grèves le Clos Blanc 1er Cru has quite a terse, backward, almost Chablis-like bouquet that demands more coaxing from the glass than the Bressandes Blanc. The palate is quite steely and strict, but unlike the Bressandes, this leaves me wanting just a tad more weight on the back end, which feels just a little tight-lipped considering the vintage. Maybe this will offer more once in bottle.

The 2017 Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Le Clos Blanc (Domaine Gagey) is more reserved than the Bressandes, unfurling in the glass with notes of honeyed citrus, praline and subtle new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered and succulent, with tangy acids—malolactic fermentation was partially blocked—and good length on the finish. This is always an insider's choice in the Jadot lineup, and this rendition is no exception.
Cask sample. Fine-boned and fresh. Polished and racy. Dryish grapefruit finish. Reasonably tense. Competent. (JR)
