Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Beaune 1Er Cru Clos du Roi from Domaine Tollot-Beaut has a touch of reduction on the nose, that metallic tincture present on Dominique Laurent's Epenottes tangible here, but underneath there is a decent amount of broody blackberry and briary fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, smooth and harmonious, gently building in the mouth. There is still a touch of oak to be resolved but there is real substance here and lovely balance.

The 2012 Beaune Clos du Roi is a gorgeous, surprisingly fruit-forward Burgundy. Black cherries, cloves, mint and licorice flesh out in the glass in a decidedly supple, round Beaune that offers quite a bit of near term appeal. All the elements fall into place in an effortless, impeccably balanced wine that will be hard to resist young.
Perfumed and sweet-fruited. Succulent and aromatic. Very light palate, but the fruit persists through to the finish. A little new oak scent lingers too. (RH)
