Punteggio 97/100 · Da bere 2026-2046, Audrey Frick, jebdunnuck.com, Feb 2026

From their second year working biodynamically with single-berry selection, the 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino Piaggione pours a jeweled ruby hue and is riper yet beautifully focused on the nose, with cherry liqueur, fresh lavender, mocha, and a decadent cherry-chocolate note. The palate is full-bodied but lifted, with silky tannins, refined texture, and supple richness that stays balanced through the finish. It’s already showing beautifully and should have a long runway ahead. Drink 2026-2046. Felix and Sabine Eichbauer purchased the Salicutti estate in 2016 from Francesco Leanza. The wines for this report were tasted at the estate.

From the steepest site of the estate, with a southern exposure, the magenta/ruby-colored 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino Piaggione is concentrated with gorgeous aromas of Amarena cherries, pure sweet herbs, smoky stones, and a polished feel. It's full-bodied on the palate but feels weightless, with refined, velvety tannins and a long finish. It's very finessed and quite impressive. The producers were leaning toward a more finessed approach in this vintage that comes through in the wine without sacrificing anything for the ripeness, texture, and feel of the wine. Bravo. Drink 2026-2050. Felix and Sabine Eichbauer purchased the Salicutti estate in 2016 from Francesco Leanza, whom they have worked closely with during the transition. I made my first visit to the estate in November 2024, where each of these wines were tasted.

The Salicutti 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Piaggione focuses mostly on red fruit flavors, and it shows elegant, chalky tannins with blue flower and crushed stone. There's a point of white peppercorn on the close. From compact, mineral-rich soils, this wine is all about smoothness and silkiness, and that's the very first impression it makes on the palate. It appears even silkier and finer the longer it stays in the glass.

The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Piaggione is drop-dead gorgeous, with a wonderfully fresh and lively bouquet of crushed strawberries and cherries elevated by hints of sweet Christmas spice, mint and rhubarb. Seductively round and supple, it flows across the palate with ease as juicy acidity enlivens its red and blue fruits. The 2020 doesn't miss a beat, leaving a spicy and tart sensation that keeps the mouth watering despite the edgy tannins. Already gorgeous today, the Piaggione will enjoy a long and broad drinking window.
